Hydroxyzine is a first-generation antihistamine of the diphenylmethane and piperazine classes, first developed in 1956. Primarily prescribed for allergic conditions such as itchiness and urticaria, it also exhibits anxiolytic and sedative properties, making it useful for treating generalized anxiety disorder and insomnia. Hydroxyzine is additionally employed to reduce nausea and has been used to potentiate opioid analgesia while diminishing opioid-related side effects like itchiness.
