Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic of the arylcyclohexylamine class, developed in the early 1960s by Parke-Davis Laboratories as a replacement for phencyclidine (PCP). Widely employed in both human and veterinary medicine, it is considered the archetypal dissociative substance. Recreational use became widespread through the 1990s rave and nightclub scenes. More recently, it has attracted significant clinical interest for its ability to rapidly alleviate treatment-resistant depression and suicidal ideation.
