Diazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine first patented in 1959 by Hoffmann-La Roche and launched in 1963. It is widely regarded as the prototypical benzodiazepine against which others in its class are measured. Prescribed for anxiety disorders, seizures, alcohol withdrawal, muscle spasms, and insomnia, it became one of the most frequently prescribed medications in the world, ranking as the best-selling medication in the United States from 1968 to 1982.
