Morphine is the principal alkaloid of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and the prototypical opioid analgesic. First isolated by Friedrich Sertürner in 1805, it has served as the foundation from which numerous semi-synthetic opioids have been derived. Morphine produces potent analgesia, euphoria, and sedation, and is used clinically for the management of moderate to severe pain. Its use carries significant risks of tolerance, physical dependence, and abuse.
