Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant of the phenidate class. First synthesized in 1944, it became one of the most widely prescribed medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, marketed under brands such as Ritalin and Concerta. Outside clinical settings, it is used recreationally and as a cognitive enhancer, though its stimulant and euphoric effects are generally considered less pronounced than those of amphetamines.
