Nitrous oxide is an atypical dissociative inhalant with the chemical formula N₂O. First identified by Joseph Priestly in 1772, its anesthetic properties were later discovered in the 19th century, earning it the name 'laughing gas' due to its euphoria and laughter-inducing effects. When inhaled, it produces rapid analgesia, mild sedation, and brief psychedelic dissociation. Widely used medically in surgery and dentistry, it is also commonly encountered recreationally through whipped cream chargers. Chronic abuse may cause neurological damage through vitamin B12 inactivation.
