DOM is a psychedelic amphetamine of the DOx family, first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin in 1963 and later documented in his 1991 book PiHKAL. It gained notoriety during the 1967 Summer of Love in San Francisco, where high-dosed tablets caused hospitalizations due to its characteristically slow onset and extremely long duration. Shulgin considered it one of his "magical half-dozen" — his personal favorite compounds. It produces stimulant effects at lower doses and hallucinogenic effects at higher doses.
