1,4-butandiolo

1,4-Butanediol is a synthetic diol compound first synthesized in 1890 by Dutch chemist Pieter Johannes Dekkers. Widely used industrially as a solvent and in the manufacture of plastics and polyurethanes, it also sees recreational use as a depressant. It functions as a prodrug for GHB, producing reportedly similar effects. It is considered habit-forming and carries additional health risks compared to GHB, notably liver toxicity.
