PMMA, para-methoxymethylamphetamine, is a structural hybrid of PMA and methamphetamine that is sold as ecstasy, historically under logos such as Mitsubishi and Jumbo. It releases serotonin and inhibits monoamine oxidase A, and unlike MDMA it appears not to release dopamine, so the effect people expect from a pill largely fails to arrive and they take another. Its main acute toxicity is dose dependent hyperthermia, made worse by heat, dehydration and repeated doses, and animal data show only a narrow margin between an active dose and a lethal one. It is usually found alongside PMA, which shares the same mechanism of raising serotonin and inhibiting monoamine oxidase A, crosses into the brain more readily, and makes the mixture more toxic than either substance alone. The EU drugs agency assessed PMMA in 2001 after deaths in Austria and Denmark, and it has been under EU-wide control since 2002.
