Alpha-PVP, MDPV and NEP are cathinones, from the same chemical family as mephedrone, but with a far more compulsive profile than the MMC and CMC compounds most people mean when they say cathinone. Alpha-PVP and MDPV are pyrovalerones and are commonly smoked, where the effect is short: alpha-PVP peaks within minutes and is largely gone inside half an hour, and it is that short window rather than a long one that drives the redosing pressure they are known for. NEP is closer to the mephedrone side but has arrived in quantity only recently, going from a single sample to 146 across the services we track.
Of 159 samples in this group, a third contained a second compound, and the pattern is unusual: they are mostly found mixed with the cathinones people actually ordered. The leading explanation is cross-contamination somewhere in production or packaging rather than deliberate substitution, though that is read off the pattern rather than established by the lab reports.

That is the practical risk. Somebody buying 4-MMC and receiving a blend with alpha-PVP in it gets a more compulsive drug than the one they dosed for, and no reagent will separate the two.

They confirm you are in this family rather than holding a stimulant sold as one, which is the first thing to establish. Because the dose ranges differ between these compounds, pair that with a scale and, where it matters, a testing card.

Because they are not interchangeable by weight and are being substituted for each other, the two tests that help here are a milligram scale and a TLC testing card. The scale handles the dose, and the testing card shows whether the powder is one compound or two.
