Hofmann drug test – how does it work?
If you are conducting a drug test with the Hofmann reagent, it is not a complicated task. You need to place a sample of the substance to be tested on the plate included in the kit. You can also use any other ceramic surface instead, such as the bottom of a cup or plate. If the substance to be tested is in the form of a tablet, powder or crystal, you need to crush it into a dust form. If you are testing a jelly or blotter, cut off a corner of it (about 1/8 of its volume).
You can also perform the Hofmann test using liquids. In this situation, you need to dry the drop on paper or a ceramic surface.
What to do next. After preparing the sample, you need to add the reagent to it – you should use such an amount of reagent to cover the test piece. Then you need to wait five minutes (in the case of a gel or blotter, it will be 30 minutes) and check how the color of the sample has changed. Each substance in the sample is a different color. Keep in mind that the test will only allow you to detect the presence of a substance, but will not tell you the amount. However, you can also achieve this, but you will need a TLC drug test for purity.
What do you need to keep in mind when performing the Hofmann drug test?
Hofmann reagent contains substances hazardous to human health. Do not allow it to come into contact with your skin, and when it does, immediately wash the contact area with warm soapy water. When you perform the Hofmann test, it is recommended to wear protective gloves and goggles. It should be conducted in a well-ventilated room.
