The Hofmann (p-DMAB-TS) reagent test, also known as the modified Ehrlich test, is a chemical assay used to detect and identify the presence of various substances, including tryptamines, lysergamides and other indole-based psychoactive compounds. This test involves the reaction of the substance with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (p-DMAB) and ferric chloride. The resulting color change indicates the presence of certain compounds, aiding in the identification of most notably LSD. This modified Ehrlich test, which remains a valuable tool in forensic and analytical chemistry.
