What does methamphetamine look like?

Methamphetamine is the substance most strongly associated with a particular look, which is large clear or bluish-white shards. That reputation makes the appearance especially misleading, because the clarity is a product of how slowly it crystallised and can be reproduced by things that are not methamphetamine at all.

Clear shard. The clarity comes from how it crystallised, and several cheap substances crystallise just as well.

The forms it comes in

The table below lists the shapes methamphetamine turns up in and what each one actually indicates, which is usually something about processing rather than about quality.

Forms of methamphetamine, and what each one does and does not indicate
Form What it looks like What it tells you
Large shard Clear to white, glassy, sharp edges Slow crystallisation, nothing about identity
Small crystal Cloudier, mixed sizes Faster crystallisation or handling damage
Powder White, sometimes slightly yellow Crushed crystal, or another white powder

Colour

Clear and white are usual. A yellow, brown or pink tint points at residual chemicals from the synthesis. A faint blue tint is sometimes sought after because of television, which is worth saying plainly: blue meth is a plot device, and any blue you see is a dye.

Texture and shine

Shards are hard, translucent and break with a glassy edge. MSM, which is cheap, legal and widely available, forms very similar clear crystals and has been the standard meth cut for decades for exactly this reason. Side by side, most people cannot separate them by eye.

What looks the same

MSM is the main one and is visually excellent. Epsom salts, sugars and other white crystals also appear. Because the cut is added as crystal rather than powder, it survives inspection better than most cuts in this series.

What the look does tell you

Genuinely oversized crystal at a low price is the one appearance signal worth acting on, and what it suggests is MSM rather than quality. Beyond that, clarity, size and shape describe the crystallisation, not the molecule.

Where looking stops

Nothing above identifies a substance. Appearance cannot tell you which molecule you have, it cannot tell you how much of it is there, and it cannot see the cuts, because the things added to methamphetamine are chosen partly for looking like it. Two samples that look identical can be different substances at different strengths.

That is not a reason to give up on knowing. It is the reason chemistry exists, and the steps are quick. A reagent answers what the substance is. A testing card separates the sample and shows what else is in there along with a rough percentage. A laboratory analysis gives you an exact figure when the answer has to be exact.

Questions?

Is clear shard the purest form?

No. Clarity reflects how slowly it crystallised. MSM forms very clear crystal and is the most common cut.

Does blue meth exist?

Only as dye. The blue in the television series was a plot device, not chemistry.

Are bigger crystals better?

Bigger usually means slower crystallisation. It is not a purity measurement.

Can I spot MSM by eye?

Usually not, which is the whole problem. It looks like good product and is added as crystal.
