What is in fake Xanax?

Designer benzodiazepines are benzodiazepines that were never licensed as medicines. They are pressed into tablets that copy pharmaceutical ones, sold under the pharmaceutical name, and in samples submitted to laboratories they turn up in roughly one benzo in six. Ethylbromazolam is the one you are most likely to meet.

What is actually in tablets sold as benzos

Across 803 samples submitted as a benzodiazepine, most did contain the pharmaceutical one people expected. Diazepam came back in 349 of them and alprazolam in 90. But 142, close to one in six, contained a designer benzodiazepine instead, and ethylbromazolam alone accounted for 81 of those. These are other people’s samples rather than a description of yours, which is exactly why the question is worth settling for the tablet in your hand.

What laboratories found in 803 samples sold as a benzodiazepine
Detected Samples What it means
Diazepam 349 The pharmaceutical, as sold
Alprazolam 90 The pharmaceutical, as sold
Ethylbromazolam 81 Unlicensed, the most common designer benzo
Clonazepam 50 The pharmaceutical, as sold
Bromazolam 29 Unlicensed
Cocaine 52 Not a benzodiazepine at all
Paracetamol 33 Filler, no active benzo
An opioid (heroin, 6-MAM, fentanyl or a nitazene) 18 The one that stops breathing

Why the dose is the problem

These compounds are not weaker versions of the real thing. Ethylbromazolam is roughly comparable to diazepam at about 4 mg against 10 mg, so a tablet pressed to look like a 10 mg diazepam can carry more than twice the effect it advertises. Presses are not laboratories either, so the amount varies from tablet to tablet within the same batch. That combination, an unknown compound at an unknown strength, is what sends people to hospital rather than to sleep.

What actually goes wrong

Benzodiazepines carry serious risks of their own, and an unknown tablet sharpens all of them. Blackouts and missing hours happen at doses people take on purpose, and what you do during them is not something you get to decide afterwards: injuries, driving, decisions you will not remember making. Regular use builds dependence quickly, and stopping abruptly after that can bring on seizures, which makes benzodiazepine withdrawal one of the few that is dangerous in itself and needs a doctor rather than willpower. Alcohol compounds every part of this.

On top of that sits a risk that is not the benzodiazepine at all. Synthetic opioids are occasionally pressed into tablets sold as benzos, and those stop breathing. Of those 803 samples, 18 contained one. That is uncommon, and it is why the benzodiazepine kit ships with fentanyl strips, because ten seconds rules it out.

What you can settle at home, and what you cannot

How to detect alprazolam, bromazolam and clonazepam
Alprazolam, bromazolam and clonazepam with Zimmermann. The first two read alike; only clonazepam separates.

Zimmermann confirms that a benzodiazepine is present and reads clonazepam distinctively, which is enough to rule out the tablet that contains no benzodiazepine at all. Beyond that it reports a family rather than a member, and alprazolam, etizolam, clonazolam and ethylbromazolam are all triazolo compounds that read alike. Naming which one you have is a laboratory question, and since they are active at different doses, the family answer is not something to dose on.

Questions?

What is ethylbromazolam?

An unlicensed benzodiazepine that appears in counterfeit pharmaceutical tablets. Roughly 4 mg is comparable to 10 mg of diazepam.

Is bromazolam the same thing?

A close relative, and also unlicensed. Both are triazolo compounds and a reagent cannot separate them.

Can a reagent tell me which benzo I have?

No. Zimmermann confirms a benzodiazepine is there and singles out clonazepam. Naming the rest needs a laboratory.

Are designer benzos stronger?

Not as a rule, but they are active at different doses from the pharmaceutical they imitate, and a press is not a laboratory, so the amount varies between tablets.

Why do fentanyl strips come with a benzo kit?

Because benzodiazepines do not stop your breathing and the opioids occasionally pressed into these tablets do.
